Joomla!™ 1.5 Global Configuration
In both Joomla!™ 1.0 and Joomla!™ 1.5 you can configure various global attributes of your site in the Global Configuration settings.
To change your Global Configuration settings:
- Login as a Super Administrator.
- Under the Site menu go to the Global Configuration.
- Change the configuration for your site as required.
- Click the Save icon in the top right icon bar.
Site tab
Site Settings
You can change the Default WYSIWYG editor, if you have another editor extension installed. If you prefer viewing more items in your site lists, such as the articles list, module list, menu item list, etc. change the List Length to 50 or 100. You will then view 50 or 100 list items at a time rather than only 20 items. If you would like to have more than 10 items on your RSS feeds list, change the Feed length to the required number of items.
Metadata Settings
Change your Global Site Meta fields from the standard Joomla! content to information pertaining to your site.
SEO Settings
If you want Search Engine Friendly URLs (SEF URLs) you will need to enable them. Only change Use Apache mod_rewrite to Yes, if you are on a Linux web server and mod_rewrite is installed on the server. For this to work you must also rename htaccess.txt to .htaccess. The htaccess.txt file is found in the root of your Joomal! installation.

Media Settings
If you would like to change where images are stored by default, change the Path to the Image Folder and Path to Media Folder to the folder you would like these type of files to be stored in.
Global Configuration Physical Location
The global configuration parameters are stored in the file configuration.php in your root of you Joomla! installation. While you are developing your site, set the permissions on the configuration file to 666 so you can update the file using the Administrator back-end. Before you go live with your site you should at least change the file permission on configuration.php to 644. This file contains the information on how to access your database, so you should protect it as best you can. The suggested method for protecting the contents of this file from hackers is to move it up one level, out of the root of your site. The FAQ "How do I move confidential files outside of public_html?" will guide you through the steps to move configuration.php up one level. After you have moved your configuration.php file out of the Joomla! root, you may need to edit the configuration.php file directly rather than using the Administrator Global Configuration function. Depending upon how your web host has setup the server, editing your Global Configuration parameters may or may not work within the Joomla! back-end administration function. Also, note that if you move the configuration file above public_html, you have to edit two define.php files: /public_html/includes/define.php and /public_html/administrator/includes/define.php. The path to the configuration file must be the same in both files.
For more information on how to secure your Joomla! site from hackers see: Joomla! Administraotrs Security Checklist.
Note that there are some bugs in 1.5 currently, which does not allow you to move some folders above the root without hacking files. For example, if you try to move your Joomla! libraries /includes/framework.php will throw an error.

I usually look for some information on Joomla at http://www.torrentbasket.com/ but your website is really a good source of information.
